1. Astir Beach

   Beach, Vouliagmeni · Private beach: admission only with a ticket. Swimming inside the buoyed zone only; no pets, no own umbrellas or chairs

   A private sand beach on the Vouliagmeni peninsula, open since 1960, with the remains of the Temple of Apollo Zoster inside the grounds.

2. Balos Lagoon

   Beach, Kissamos · Natura 2000 protected area (Gramvousa)

   White sand runs out between the Gramvousa peninsula and the small Tigani headland, closing off a lagoon only a few centimetres deep, with deeper water for swimming on the right-hand side of the bay.

3. Elafonisi

   Beach, Elafonisi · Protected area (Natura 2000): no vehicles past the barrier, dunes and cedars fenced off

   A low sandy islet about 1.5 km long sits roughly 150 m off the beach, and a shallow channel lets you wade across to its dunes.

   Two sand beaches in a row, about 900 m in all, with shallow water and a small islet you can walk out to.

   Cove, Varkiza

   A string of small coves between Lake Vouliagmeni and Varkiza where wind-worn rock drops fairly steeply into the sea, reached only on foot by paths down from the coast road.

   Beach, Vai · Protected palm forest: fenced, no entry to fenced areas, no camping, no fires

   A 60-hectare palm forest, guarded by the Forest Service, grows right behind this beach of fine sand and pebbles, 24 km from Sitia.

8. Varkiza Beach

   Beach, Varkiza · Part organised beach resort (Varkiza Resort, with sunbeds and beach bars), part free public beach (East Varkiza)

   A long sand bay: the western half is Varkiza Resort with sunbeds, beach bars and free parking, the eastern 650 m is a free public beach next to the Vari-Varkiza Nautical Club.
