Swimming in Matala

On Crete's south coast, Matala is a village on the Libyan Sea, about 52 km south-west of Heraklion. Its beach lies in a small bay of coarse sand, under a cliff of soft rock cut with Roman-era tombs. A path over the hill from the village reaches Red Beach in 15 to 25 minutes, or you can take a boat from Matala harbour.
