Georgioupoli lies on Crete's north coast, about 19 km west of Rethymno and 28 km south-east of Chania. Its long sandy beach stretches either side of the mouth of the Almyros river. Lake Kournas, a freshwater lake fed from the White Mountains where thousands of birds shelter, is about 4 km south.
