Thermal baths in Ireland
Ireland's bathing custom is the hot seaweed bath of the west coast: seawater pumped up from the shore and heated, with freshly harvested seaweed in the tub, often after a few minutes in a steam cabinet and finished with a cold seawater shower. Seaside bathhouses for it date back to the middle of the 19th century, and tradition along that coast holds that the baths ease rheumatism and aching joints. Baths are usually taken in a private room, though newer outdoor tubs now sit on piers facing the Atlantic.

Questions about Ireland
Do you need to book a seaweed bath in Ireland?
Yes, plan to. Kilcullen's in Enniscrone says booking is required, VOYA in Strandhill takes a deposit when you book, and Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths on Doolin Pier sells one-hour slots online, released 90 days ahead. Sneem Seaweed Baths takes bookings by phone or email.
What should you bring to a seaweed bath in Ireland?
It depends on the bath. Kilcullen's supplies a towel, VOYA provides towels and shower products in each room and suggests flip-flops, and Sólás na Mara has towels for hire. For the outdoor barrels on Doolin Pier and at Sneem, bring swimwear and a towel: Doolin has no changing rooms on site and full nudity isn't allowed, and Sneem asks for footwear for the walk to the barrels. Oileánra on Lettermullen asks you to bring swimwear, flip-flops, towels and a water bottle.
Can children go to the seaweed baths in Ireland?
It depends on the bath. VOYA in Strandhill is for guests aged 18 and over. At Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths in Doolin, children under 16 can share a barrel with a parent or guardian free of charge, but the sauna there is 18 and over.
Where are the sea saunas in Ireland?
On the east coast around Dublin and on the west coast from Kerry to Connemara. Helios floats a sauna in Dún Laoghaire's Coal Harbour and has a rooftop one on Bray's seafront, Sandycove Sauna by the Sea sits beside the Forty Foot, and north County Dublin has The Sea Sauna in Portrane and The Wood Fired Sauna at Rush and Skerries. In the west, Brandon Bay Sauna is on the Maharees in Kerry, Galway has Blackrock Sauna on the Salthill Promenade and Power Saunas at Silverstrand, and Driftwood in An Spidéal and Oileánra on Lettermullen face the sea in Connemara.
Do you wear swimwear in Irish sea saunas?
Yes. Helios, Driftwood in An Spidéal and Blackrock Sauna in Galway require it, Blackrock allowing nudity only at advertised private clothing-optional events, and Brandon Bay Sauna doesn't allow nudity. Sandycove Sauna by the Sea asks you to bring swimwear, and The Wood Fired Sauna at Rush and Skerries and The Sea Sauna in Portrane don't allow swimsuits with metal parts. Power Saunas at Silverstrand has separate changing rooms for men and women.
Can you combine a seaweed bath with a sauna in Ireland?
Yes, at several baths. Connemara Seaweed Baths in Clifden sells a two-hour seaweed bath with its thermal suite of sauna, steam room, outdoor plunge pool and jacuzzi, and Oileánra sells a one-hour seaweed bath with its wood-fired sauna. VOYA in Strandhill and Wild Atlantic on Doolin Pier have saunas too, booked separately; the one at Doolin is 18 and over.
Can children go to sea saunas in Ireland?
Some do, with limits. Helios in Dún Laoghaire and Bray and The Wood Fired Sauna at Rush and Skerries are for adults only, and Driftwood in An Spidéal keeps social sessions for 18 and over, taking children from 12 in private sessions only. Brandon Bay Sauna sets its age limit at 16, with under-18s accompanied by a parent or guardian, and Blackrock in Galway takes under-18s with a parent's consent and an adult supervising throughout.
