About The Wood Fired Sauna, Skerries
Red Island isn't an island any more: the tide last cut it off from Skerries in the 18th century, and it is now the rocky headland that carries the pier and the lifeboat station. From 1947 until it was demolished in 1980 the Red Island Holiday Camp stood here, with 250 rooms, a dance hall and a theatre, and the Martello tower built around 1805 outlasted it. The Springers and the Captains on the south side are spots for experienced swimmers; the Springers has waves and strong currents, and there you step off flat concrete straight into the water.
