Thermal baths in Austria
Austria's thermal water rises in two settings: Alpine valleys such as the Gastein and the Ötztal, where spa towns grew around the springs, and the hills of Styria and the Vienna basin, where drilling for oil in the 20th century found hot water instead. Swimwear goes on in the pools, and Austrian sauna areas are textile-free. In Vienna, the city's own baths run saunas with sessions for women, for men and mixed.

Questions about Austria
How do you get to Therme Wien?
Take the U1 to Oberlaa, which stops at the door, about 15 minutes from the centre of Vienna. Inside, the sauna area has separate saunas for women, for men and mixed, and swimwear elsewhere must be close-fitting and non-absorbent.
Do you need to book Rogner Bad Blumau in advance?
Yes. Thermal spa entry must be reserved online, reserved tickets are held only until a set time, and day visitors enter at the Vulkania Reception. Bad Blumau railway station is 2 km away.
Can young children use Austria's thermal pools?
Mostly, with limits. At Bad Blumau children under 6 stay out of the thermal water pools and the Vulkania lake and use a fresh-water children's pool indoors. At Therme Wien under-14s need a supervising person aged at least 14, and in Gastein the saunas are closed to under-16s except on family days.
Which Gastein bath is closer to the train?
The Felsentherme in Bad Gastein, directly opposite the railway station. Bad Hofgastein station, for the Alpentherme, is about 3 km north of the town centre, with buses and taxis. See the Alps page for both Gastein baths beside the Swiss and Italian ones.
Is there a women-only sauna in Vienna?
Yes, at many of Vienna's public baths. Amalienbad, Theresienbad, Ottakringer Bad, Brigittenauer Bad, Simmeringer Bad and Floridsdorfer Bad have women's sections on several days of the week, with men's or mixed sessions at other times. Hermannbad, Apostelbad and Einsiedlerbad are for women only on Thursdays, and Penzinger Bad on Tuesdays, with a men's day on Wednesdays. All of these are textile-free and open from age 14, and at Therme Wien the sauna area has separate saunas for women, for men and mixed.
