Questions about Istanbul
Which Istanbul hammams have separate sections for men and women?
Çemberlitaş, Cağaloğlu, Hürrem Sultan, Zeyrek Çinili and Mihrimah Sultan each have a men's and a women's section open at the same time, with attendants of the same sex. Kılıç Ali Paşa has one dome, so women bathe until 16:00 and men in the evening. At Süleymaniye the main hours are for couples and families bathing together.
Can you visit an Istanbul hammam without paying for a scrub?
Yes, at a few. Çemberlitaş sells a hamam entrance with no time limit, Galatasaray a plain hammam ticket, and Mihrimah Sultan a standard bath. Zeyrek Çinili has The DIY, a self-guided session with a single-use kese. Elsewhere the cheapest option is a full ritual with a scrub and foam wash.
What do you wear in an Istanbul hammam?
Every hammam listed here gives you a peştemal, the cotton wrap, and slippers. Kılıç Ali Paşa and Galatasaray ask you to stay covered from the waist down. Çemberlitaş, Zeyrek Çinili, Mihrimah Sultan and Süleymaniye say your own swimwear is fine.
Can children go to a hammam in Istanbul?
It depends on the hammam. Kılıç Ali Paşa has a children's price for ages 4 to 12 and bathes babies free on a parent's lap. Zeyrek Çinili takes children 6 to 11 with a parent of the same sex. Cağaloğlu and Hürrem Sultan admit children from 6. Süleymaniye is for 16 and over.
Which Istanbul hammams did Mimar Sinan build?
Kılıç Ali Paşa, Hürrem Sultan, Süleymaniye, Zeyrek Çinili and Mihrimah Sultan are Sinan buildings, and Çemberlitaş is credited to him. Galatasaray is older, from 1481, and Cağaloğlu later, from 1741.
