About Çukurcuma Hamamı 1831
The bath opened as the Çukurcuma Sürahi Hamamı, on water brought to Beyoğlu by the dams and channels of Nakşidil Valide Sultan's foundation, and its later name, Süreyya, is still written on the façade. Men and women once took turns at different hours. In the 1960s it passed to Yusuf Yılmaz from Tokat, and the hemispherical dome, the wooden changing rooms on a mezzanine and the hidden stone staircases stayed as they were. The scrub mitts are hand-woven from tree bark, and the soaps are made with olive oil from Ayvalık.
