Thermal baths in Sweden
Sweden's bathhouse tradition is the kallbadhus, a cold bathhouse on piles over the sea with separate sides for women and men, a sauna and steps into the water; most are on the west and south coasts. In Stockholm, lakeside saunas keep the custom of a cold dip in winter.

Questions about Sweden
Is Centralbadet in Stockholm open?
No, it's closed for a full renovation from March 2026. The bath has a sauna, a steam room, an indoor pool and a restaurant.
Do you wear swimwear at Ribersborgs Kallbadhus in Malmö?
Not in the saunas. The operator says it's a nude bath by tradition: a towel only in the saunas, and swimwear optional in the sea. Women and men have separate sides, and the whole bathhouse is mixed on the first Monday of each month and on Tuesday mornings from 07:00.
How old do you have to be for a Swedish bathhouse?
It varies from bath to bath, and some take children with an adult. Hagabadet in Gothenburg and Centralbadet in Stockholm are for 16 and over, Sturebadet for 18 and over, and Yasuragi for 18, or 16 with a guardian, with a lower limit in Swedish school holidays. Ribersborgs Kallbadhus sets an 18 age limit but welcomes under-18s with a parent or guardian, and the Helsingborg cold-bath houses welcome under-16s with an adult. On Fridays and Saturdays the spa at Pite Havsbad in Piteå is from 15 with a guardian, and younger children come to its family spa sessions.
Do you wear swimwear in Stockholm's saunas?
At Hellasgården the women's and men's saunas are separate, clean swimwear is allowed in the sauna and the swimwear you wore in the lake must come off before you go back in; outdoors you wear swimwear or a towel. At Yasuragi you wash naked in single-sex washing rooms, then wear the house swimwear and a yukata in the mixed bathhouse.
Do you bathe naked at the Helsingborg cold-bath houses?
Yes. Kallis and Pålsjöbaden both have separate naked baths for women and men, with no swimwear in the sauna, where you sit on a large towel. On Thursday evenings one side of Pålsjöbaden opens as a mixed naked sauna for men and women who arrive together. Under-16s are welcome with an adult.
