About Balneario de Fitero
The Romans already used the water here, and in 1157 King Sancho III of Castile gave the baths to the monastery of Fitero. Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, later Viceroy of New Spain and Archbishop of Mexico, was born at the baths on 24 June 1600, and in 1728 the Old Baths took the name Virrey Palafox. During the Peninsular War, French troops used the building of 1805 as a hospital until October 1813. Mining works in 1846 found the second spring, and the New Baths built around it carry the name of the poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, who came for the cure and wrote El Miserere and La cueva de la Mora there.
