About Balneario de La Hermida
The operator says the name La Hermida grew out of Hervida, an old place name for the very hot springs here. Until 1841 there was no bathhouse, only a cave beside the spring where patients bathed in a wooden tub cut from a tree trunk. A two-storey bathhouse with lodgings upstairs followed in 1842, and in 1859 a company mining the zinc ores of Peñarrubia bought the baths from the municipality. A new bath gallery due to open in July 1936 never did: the civil war turned the spa over to military use, and it stayed closed until 2006, apart from a few months in 1941 when it sheltered children who had lost their homes in the Santander fire.
