Therma Spa, Gulf of Gera

A bathhouse on the Gulf of Gera, on the road from Mytilene to Kalloni, where thermal water at 39.3 °C flows untreated into two domed Ottoman-era stone pools, one for men and one for women, and an outdoor pool facing the bay. The operator says Captain Hussein Pasha built the first reservoir in the 18th century and that the spring was declared a thermal spring by royal decree in 1951.

About Therma Spa, Gulf of Gera

Tradition holds that the women of ancient Lesbos bathed here before their beauty contests at the nearby temple of Hera. The traveller G. Olivier, who came in 1794, wrote that the people of Mytilene drank the water and bathed in it for chronic ailments, and J. Dallaway in 1797 compared the way it rises from the rocks to St Vincent's spring in Bristol. A hotel floor went up above the bathhouse in the late 19th century and another in the 1920s. Those upper floors were later pulled down, and the ground floor with the two domed Ottoman baths was reinforced with concrete and left unchanged inside.
