About Spa des Thermes de Contrexéville
The operator traces the baths to Dr Bagard, who heard of a spring at Contrexéville while looking for a remedy for Stanislas Leszczynski, Duke of Lorraine. In 1774 Dr Thouvenel presented a paper on the water to the Royal Academy of Medicine, and the modest bathhouse grew into a resort that later received the Shah of Persia. The baths' hydrotherapy treatments use the same calcium and magnesium-rich water sold as Contrex, which the operator says gets no chemical treatment.
