Plage de Saint-Julien, Lac d'Esparron

A sand and pebble beach of about 7,000 square metres in a cove on the Var shore of the Lac d'Esparron, reached by a 7 km track. The old road to Saint-Julien and its bridge were drowned when the lake filled in 1967; remains of the bridge can still be seen.

Getting in

Access
By car on the chemin d'Aurafrède from the Gréoux-les-Bains bridge, then about 7 km of potholed track; on foot, about 5.5 km from Saint-Julien village on the waymarked GR de Pays. The tourist office warns that steep, unstable banks, deep water and changes in the reservoir level make access to the lake dangerous. Supervised swimming in July and August is on the Esparron side of the lake. Swimming is not supervised. Jumping from bridges and cliffs is banned. Thermal-engine boats, beach inflatables and electric foils are banned. Dogs must be on a lead and may not enter the water. No fires or stoves; no wild camping or bivouac; motorhomes and vans banned at night. From June to September access to the forest massifs is set by the Var prefecture according to fire risk (map published each evening at 18:00).
Parking
Car park of 120 places, regulated in July and August with an attendant. Charged 08:00 to 18:00 in July and August: car 4 EUR, motorbike 2 EUR, quad or trike 3 EUR, vehicle with boat trailer 6 EUR; bicycles and pedestrians free; cash only. Caravans and motorhomes banned; vehicles over 2.20 m high or 5.50 m long not admitted. Free from September to June.
