About Hveravellir geothermal pool
Hveravellir was first protected as a natural monument in 1960. The pool is part of a larger area of bubbling hot springs, steaming fumaroles and the Kjalhraun lava field. The Kjölur route crosses about 200 km of the central highlands from Gullfoss to Blöndudalur, and Hveravellir lies about halfway between Reykjavík and Akureyri. In winter the road needs a super jeep or a guided tour, and from October to April there's a chance to bathe under the Northern Lights.
