About Termas de Luso (Spa Termal, Aqua Sensations)
Luso's water starts as rain on the quartzite of the Serra do Bussaco, sinks more than 500 metres and is forced back up at Luso by an impermeable rock barrier; it carries so little dissolved mineral that it is classed as hyposaline. Portugal's first inventory of mineral waters, the Aquilégio Medicinal of 1726, already records a hot spring here 'that they call the Banho', and a local doctor began sending patients with skin complaints around 1775. The architect Pardal Monteiro remodelled the bathhouse in work finished in 1937, building an emanatorium over the spring that records of the time call the only one in the country. The buvete is decorated with a stained-glass window by Ricardo Léon.
