Thermal baths in Furnas
Furnas is a village in a volcanic valley in the east of São Miguel, about 30 km east of Ponta Delgada. Poça da Dona Beija and Terra Nostra Park run on iron-rich water from the Furnas volcano, and the Octant Furnas hotel sells a thermal circuit. On the north shore of Lagoa das Furnas, about 2 km south-west, pots of cozido stew are buried to cook in the hot ground by the fumaroles.

An iron-rich thermal pool in a garden laid out from 1783, when Thomas Hickling built a recreational tank at his Furnas summer house; the pool took its present size in the 1930s under Vasco Bensaude.
