About Cascate del Mulino
The water starts as rain on Monte Amiata and, by Terme di Saturnia's account, spends about 40 years underground before it surfaces in the spring pool at their resort, then runs across the fields to the falls. Over the centuries it has built up a stair of milky-blue travertine pools. It carries hydrogen sulphide, 14.5 mg per litre by the resort's figure. The Romans called these waters Aquae Sanctae, and the local legend has Saturn hurling lightning at the earth to set them flowing.
