About Fonteverde

Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici had the palazzo built over a thermal spring in 1607. At the start of the 20th century there was only a bathhouse behind the portico, with tubs, showers and treatment rooms; a project begun in the 1930s added the first hotel, the Casina delle Rose, the entrance avenue, the pool and a triple arch of red brick that stands alone in the gardens, framing the valley. The water rises odourless at 42 °C, carrying fluoride, magnesium, calcium and sulphur, and the tunnel between the hotel and the spa displays ancient finds made during the building works.
